Workout Meetups

After a whirlwind of a weekend and a vacation day yesterday, I knew that I had to get back on track with eating healthy and working out.  So this morning I woke up bright & early and jogged 5 minutes to the gym for a cross training workout.  I began with 20 minutes on the elliptical and then moved on to the following arm toning workout (copied from Pinterest):

*Repeat set 2-3 times

I did the set twice and it turned out to be great workout!  I love how it constantly switched up the moves so I never got bored and it was over in no time at all.  I’ll definitely be repeating this workout real soon.

Workout Meetups!

While on the elliptical, I read People Style magazine and this little tid bit of an article caught my attention:

Workout meetups are such a good idea!  It’s so nice being able to catch up with a friend and get a great workout. Plus, it’s wayyyy cheaper than meeting a friend for dinner and drinks. 😀  I haven’t had one in a while but maybe I’ll try bringing them back!  Usually my friends don’t want to run at 5:15 am (I don’t blame them, obviously) and I’m not a fan of running after work when it’s super hot and sunny……   but I do love running in the evening once the weather cools down.  So this Fall I’ll have to plan more workout meetups! 

Breakfast

I usually eat breakfast at work but I was starving after my workout so I quickly prepared 2 frozen waffles and topped them each with banana slices and drizzled honey. 

I had the van’s “power grains – 10g protein” waffles that I recently discovered at the grocery store.  

By the way, I had no clue that van’s even made protein waffles!?  Maybe these waffles are new??  Either way, they were delicious and I’m very excited to have a new favorite frozen waffle. 😀

Shrimp Rolls

I woke up this morning and wasn’t in the mood to run.  But since I’m training for a half marathon I figured I should try to stick to my training program and at least get my butt out the door.  I knew that once I started my run, I’d end up feeling much better (sometimes the hardest part is just getting out the door.)  I also switched up my typical route and ran along the beach towards Dorchester.  Such a pretty view! 🙂  

About 35 minutes into my run my hip started to really hurt so I ended up walking the last 5 minutes.  I feel so much better now that my workout is over with and I can relax for the rest of the day.  Run and done!

Dinner

Last night’s dinner was an oldie but goodie in the Totten/Doyle house.  We both wanted seafood for dinner so Mike whipped up a couple of insanely delicious shrimp rolls.  I think this meal is actually better than lobster rolls and it’s so easy to make!    

Shrimp Rolls

Makes 4 servings / prep time is 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 lb cooked, peeled shrimp
  • 2 stalks of celery, diced
  • 2 tablespoons light mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons scallions, diced
  • 1 teaspoon Frank’s hot sauce
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • salt and pepper
  • 4 hot dog buns

We combined all the ingredients in a medium size bowl.  Then scooped the mixture into toasted hot dog buns and chowed down.  That’s it – so easy!  We also enjoyed a couple of Corona Lights with the meal…. 😀  It’s a perfect summer time dinner.

Mmmm mmmmm!  I ended up eating 2 of these since hot dog rolls are pretty small….

Workouts For The Week (adapted from my half marathon training plan)

  • Monday: run 40 minutes <— Done
  • Tuesday: cross train (elliptical plus strength training)
  • Wednesday: run + speed for 50 minutes (might do repeat 200’s & 400’s?)
  • Thursday: cross train for 50 minutes
  • Friday: off
  • Saturday: run – endurance 6 miles
  • Sunday: off

Dark Cherry, Chocolate Protein Smoothie

Hello, hello!  I hope you’re enjoying your weekend!

Question for ya:  Can you eat healthy at a bbq or is it really difficult?  For me it’s a challenge.  Mike and I attended my neighbor’s BBQ yesterday afternoon and I knew I should go into the party with a game plan (and really stick to it this time!)  I usually start off fairly healthy and slowly end up pigging out on anything and everything in sight.  This time I was going to practice will power! 

Here’s a couple of the rules I tried to follow:

  • Drink water and not just beer.
  • Take a loop around to check out all the food before digging in.
  • Do not stand near a food table!
  • Start with veggies and fruits (whenever I start with healthy foods, it’s easier sticking with them).
  • Don’t eat crap that I can eat anytime, such as Doritos and tortilla chips. 
  • 1 dessert, so pick wisely. 
  • Have protein with my meal.

And surprisingly my game plan worked!!  I also reminded myself that a BBQ isn’t all about the food, it’s about hanging-out and catching up with friends and family…  😀

Mid-Morning Snack

Once again I was craving a cold, tasty smoothie today.  I decided to mix it up by adding the dark sweet cherries that we had in the fridge.  I also wanted it to be a filling smoothie so I knew a scoop of protein powder as a must. And to make it even better I threw some chocolate shavings to the top of the glass.  Perfect-O. 🙂

Dark Cherry, Chocolate Protein Smoothie

Combine the following in the blender:

  • 1 cup pitted dark sweet cherries
  • 1 frozen medium size banana
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • 1/4 cup plain greek yogurt
  • 2 teaspoons raw honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

**Top the smoothie with chocolate shavings.

This smoothie is loaded with protein and antioxidants!  ENJOY!
