I have a pedometer….. and I love it!

So my company started a competition last Thursday that involves 7,000 coworkers (1,000 teams w/ 7 ppl per team) and we’re each given a pedometer and told to track our steps on a website for the next 3 months.  Whichever teams has the most steps wins.  Since I’m super competitive with myself I’m going to make sure I get a good amount of steps in a day, at least 10,000.  No excuses!

And so far this pedometer has been great!  Not only has it forced me to workout when I really didn’t want to (aka I was really hung-over one day and just wanted to die in bed) but it’s also had me get out and enjoy the weather every day.  The last week has involved walks along Mayflower beach:

a 7 mile run around Castle Island:

2 loops around Breakheart Reservation and also a power-walk around the lake in Wakefield:

Most the these activities wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t need to add extra steps to my day.  Do you realize I only walk about 2,500 steps in a typical day?!  In order to reach the recommended amount/my goal of 10,000 steps I have to really go out and try.  So each day has involved an extra walk/jog at the end of my day.

Btw, another great thing about power-walking is that it goes hand-in-hand with grabbing drinks. 🙂 

Tonight Mike and I power-walked the 3+ mile lake and then wondered over to the nearby restaurant, Bellino’s for a cocktail on the patio.  

Thanks to this walk and a run earlier this morning, I ended up with 15,526 steps today.  A good start but not enough to win the competition.  Gotta step it up!

Taking it outdoors

Today’s workout was quick, fun, and sweaty!  The best kinda workout if you ask me.

I headed over to Breakheart Reservation and ran about 1.5 HILLY miles until I reached the playground.  I then made up a circuit workout which included the following moves:

  • 12 push-ups leaning against a bar
  • 12 pull-ups on the bar
  • 20 walking lunges
  • 1 minute mountain climbers
  • 1 minute plank

**Repeat 3 times**

Between the touch workout, the crazy humidity, and being out of shape, I was huffin’ and puffin’ in no time at all!  I rested for a couple of minutes after the last circuit and then ran the rest of the loop (about 1.5 miles) back to my car. 

(So quiet and peaceful)

The workout took about 40 minutes and left me feeling great.  And hopefully got me back into my workout groove! 

Btw, It’s workouts like this that make me question my gym membership.  Seriously, doing a plank on the grass while listening to the birds is a 1 bajillion times better than doing a plank on a nasty mat at the gym.  Right?!?  For now on if it’s nice out, I’m taking my workout outdoors! 🙂

Dinner

Tonight’s dinner came together in no time at all thanks to a bag of frozen shrimp stir fry and a bag of frozen corn. 

This meal took about 7 minutes to prepare and tasted delicious!  Trader Joe’s really does has the best frozen foods aisle. 

I also added shredded mozzarella on top and a glass of wine on the side.  Yummm!

Monday’s motivation and fun ways to workout

Oh, so true! 

Working out doesn’t have to be work.  We all know that.  But for some reason we all have those days when it just feels like such a pain to actually workout.  So here’s some idea’s that will have you looking forward to your next workout!  No more skipping a workout and plopping on the couch with a glass wine and an episode of RHOC!  Even though that is tempting we all know it feels way better to workout than it does to skip it……..

  • DVD’s (INSANITY workout, Jillian Michael’s, Bethenny Frankel’s, etc)
  • Frisbee!

  • Hike
  • Jump rope

  • Pinterest workouts!  This site has so many great, creative workouts
  • Play at the park with your kids
  • Power-walk with a friend, bf, spouse, coworker…
  • Racquetball
  • Rock climb
  • Roller blade

  • Spin class or ride your bike outside

  • Tennis
  • Track workouts (OK, so this isn’t technically “fun” but it’s nice to switch it up and add sprints to your training schedule)
